The coming of September means the coming of autumn. The colder days, beautiful bronze foliage and earlier evenings are the perfect environment for some comfort food – and the traditional British Sunday Pub Roast might just be the best kind of comfort food! With a wide selection of pubs across the Dartmouth and South Hams area there’s a lot of choice when it comes to finding a truly great Sunday Roast. Here are just some of our favourites, all within a short distance of Galmpton Touring Park!
The Grill Room at The Royal Castle Hotel
Dartmouth
Just five minutes walk from the town centre, and offering picturesque views of Dartmouth harbour, The Grill Room at the Royal Castle Hotel makes a perfect Sunday lunch venue. If the location isn’t enough to persuade you, the Sunday carvery at the Grill Room offers delicious Beef, Lamb, Pork and Turkey with crispy potatoes and freshly prepared veg – all served within the stately atmosphere of the Royal Castle Hotel! If meat isn’t quite what you’re after, then the Grill Room also offers Fish and Vegetarian options for Sunday lunch.
Once you’ve finished with your main why not take advantage of the Grill Room’s sweets buffet? Offering a selection of sweet treats to cap off an excellent meal. If you’ve no more room for pudding then there’s always the hotel bar – with its selection of local ales and a fully stocked wine cellar.
The Pig and Whistle
Totnes
The Pig and Whistle is a traditional, British country pub offering real, local ales (including a local favourite in Dartmoor Brewery’s Jail Ale), bed and breakfast – and of course – good food! All of the food is sourced locally and cooked fresh, so that when the Pig and Whistle opens for lunch at 12 o’clock on a Sunday – you know you’re in for something tasty. Despite the traditional nature of this family run pub, you’ll still have access to all the modern conveniences, including free wifi. There’s also a menu for children who might not be quite ready for a Sunday Roast and dogs are also welcome.
The Monks Retreat
Broadhempston
Slightly further North of Galmpton Touring parks sits the rural village of Broadhempston – home to The Monks Retreat. This pub dates back to 1450 and still features log fires and other traditional features – adding to that autumn comfort feel! This family run inn cooks with only the freshest of ingredients, so much so that you’re never quite sure what meat will be available, as the meats menu changes weekly depending on the availability of ingredients. Alongside the traditional roast, The Monks Retreat also offers other British favourites – including a Steak and Jail Ale pie – made using local ale – ham, egg and chips and cauliflower cheese bake!
The Berry Head Hotel
Brixham
The stately cliff top Berry Head Hotel serves a delicious carvery every Sunday from noon to 2:30pm. Menus are created anew each time based on what fresh ingredients the kitchen has available to them – but the menu always includes three meats and a vegetarian option so you’re never short on choice. In the summer months the hotel hosts a Jazz band, who play on the terrace to create a relaxed Sunday feeling. You won’t find that in many other places!
So when you find yourself in our neck of the woods this autumn, make sure you keep warm with a delicious Sunday roast, great atmosphere and good friends. Better still, all of these venues are in driving distance of Galmpton Touring Park – there really is no excuse!
